In an era marked by immediacy, Will Haffey's study of neotropical birdlife has been something of a contrast. Beginning nearly twenty years ago with a grant from Duke University and The Organization for Tropical Studies, he has made it a lifelong goal to explore, study, and share every corner the varied ecosystems of Latin America. In addition to providing cutting-edge research in important avian conservation efforts stateside, he has studied both the feeding behavior of fruit-eating birds in Costa Rica and interspecific aggression in wading birds in Brazil. While currently an educator in the New York City area, Will’s work with an international bespoke bird tour company, Nature Travel Birding, has allowed him to bring his passion for birds to those who wish to explore the neotropics.
A dedicated birder, Will believes that a great birding trip is greatly enhanced by an exposure and appreciation for local culture. From a fireside Argentinian parillada to a visit to small, herbal distilleries high in the Peruvian Andes, the vibrancy of Latin America’s birdlife shines even more brightly when surrounded by the food, music, and culture of each region. Despite having extensively birded the Americas, Will has dedicated himself in particular to exploring the Mexican state of Oaxaca, studying the regionally unique birdlife along with its ubiquitous moles and mezcal.
